Where this one comes from

Artemisia Gentileschi painted this in Florence around 1615, in the years after a trial in which her father prosecuted his colleague Agostino Tassi for raping her, and during which she was tortured to test whether her testimony held. She left Rome for Florence, became the first woman admitted to the drawing academy there, took commissions from the Medici, and signed them.

What is in the picture

She is turned away and looking back over one shoulder, caught partway through something, with a lute across her lap and the light landing on one side of the face. The dress is blue with gold braid, and the cloth wound through her hair is doing the work a hat would do elsewhere. The instrument was painted by somebody who knew how one is held: the left hand is stopping strings, not arranged on them.

When people use it

It is the look of somebody interrupted in the middle of doing something they are good at. It suits the reply to a message that lands in the middle of real work, the person asked at a party to explain their job in one sentence, and any photograph taken half a second after the subject said wait.

How your face lands in it

The head is turned a good thirty degrees off the shoulders and lit hard from one side, so this is the picture here where a photo taken square to the lens will visibly fight the pose — shoot from slightly off to one side if you can. The wrapped cloth covers the hairline, so nothing is asked of your own hair, and the face sits large in the frame, about a quarter of its height.

Questions

Who was Artemisia Gentileschi?

The most celebrated woman painter of the seventeenth century. She trained in her father's workshop, was the first woman let into the Florentine academy of drawing in 1616, ran her own studio in Naples for decades, and then dropped out of the story almost entirely until the twentieth century put her back into it.

Is that really her?

It is generally accepted as a self-portrait — the face matches the one she used for herself in other pictures. A musician was a subject she could pose for and paint at the same time, which is an efficiency a lot of seventeenth-century painters discovered about themselves.

Was she famous while she lived?

Very. She worked for the Medici, corresponded with Galileo, sold through agents to the Spanish court, and was paid at rates her male contemporaries would have recognised. The forgetting came later.

Is it free?

Yes. There is a limit on how many you can make in a day, and sharing one earns the allowance back.

Do you keep my photo?

No. Your selfie is used to make the image and then dropped — it is never written to disk. The finished meme is stored, because it has a link people can open, and it is deleted after 90 days.

Can I use someone else’s face?

Please do not. Use your own. Putting a real person into a picture they did not agree to is exactly the thing this is not for.

Can I post the result?

Yes, anywhere you like. The paintings are public domain; what you make with your own face is yours.
